My First Concert Of Symphonic Music - 935 Words

The first question I asked myself at the beginning of the semester was how much do I actually know about symphonic music? I have always characterized symphonic music as a lengthy form of musical composition for orchestra that is all tuxedos and formality. My impression on the basis of the symphonic music has always been portrayed with that specific formality aspect where there wasn’t a complete understanding towards symphonic music. When attending my first concert of symphonic music last year to listen to my roommate play made a change that I never thought possible. I never thought that I would grow into liking that kind of music that the Delaware Valley University students were playing on that particular day turning my interest in music. One particular group that rather quickly grabs my attention each time I go to listen is the symphonic band. Having a rather peaceful use of instruments when playing that draws your attention directly into that performance led by the conduct or Dr.Jack Schemidt. These spectacular performances given from the school band take place in the Life Science Building Auditorium at Delaware Valley University typically Sunday afternoons. At each of these free events for people throughout the community and the campus to attend there are several groups that play throughout the concert. An organization is defined by its ability or inability to meet its set targets. If there is a positive trend where targets are being met, the organization is said to be performing well while if there is a negative trend where targets are not being met, it is said to be performing poorly (Collier and Agyei-Ampomah, 2006). In HCC there was setting of budget targets for each division, these were in the form of quarterly and monthly budget targets which were supposed to be met failure to which the division manager concerned would have a hard task of explaining why they were not met. These budget targets were the force what guided the performance of various stakeholders .The company used meeting of these targets as an evaluation tool. A division was evaluated on its ability to generate profits and meet or exceed its targets or inability to meet these targets in the long run. Essentially, this evaluation was not based on how low or high these profits were .Rather it was based on the relationship between the profits for each division and its initial targets. The change was also necessitated by lack of uniformity in performance across the various departments .For a number of years the company was used to the fact that there were those divisions that would always perform well and those that would always perform poorly. This lack of uniformity makes it hard for the corporate to make plans touching on the whole Company because the strengths and the abilities of different department s were the same. It was therefore necessary to have in place methods that would place the various divisions at the same level so that the company would move forward as a whole instead of having some divisions lag behind others in as far as achievement of budget targets was concerned. The New Processes and Strengths and Weaknesses The new philosophy laid its emphasis on the possible minimum performance standards. It would require people to hit minimum performance standards then their performance would be rated based on their ability to hit these targets. The earning of bonuses and other extra rewards will therefore be based on the ability to meet minimum standards .The new process will also require managers to submit budgets that are realistic and achievable. A pool bonus would be instituted and offered if a department was able to achieve all its targets such as profits and delinquencies. However, the importance of set targets would differ from time to time. Advantages There are a number of advantages that would result from the new philosophy. First and most important is the fact that it would enhance the general performance of the organization. Having in place realistic goals and achievable targets has the possibility of motivating people towards the achievement of organizational goals .Unlike the old system that involved unrealistic targets which to some extend allowed people to choose to perform or fail to perform, with the new philosophy there was no two way about it as everything was tied on performance and meeting of set targets. These agreed upon budgets would then be used as the basis of evaluation depending on the extent to which they have been achieved or not achieved. The new philosophy allowed thorough monitoring of performance. Division managers were tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that their particular departments met the agreed upon targets .so they had to closely monitor the performance of their staff members to ensure that these requirements were met. On the other hand corporate managers were required to monitor the activities of individual departments to ensure that they were working towards the achievements of their targets. The other advantage of this new philosophy was the centralization of research, advertising and promotion. Previously departments worked independently without any form of interrelationships with the adoption of the new philosophy, a corporate marketing function was established to assist in research, marketing and promotion. This was to cater for such needs for the whole organization .this was advantageous is in that it was possible to balance the performances of different departments so that performance related disparities were minimized Additionally a corporate engineering service function was started with the aim of coming up with new product designs usable by the connector divisions .This was likely to improve the prospect of the Organization. Disadvantages Although there were numerous advantages associated with the new philosophy, there were disadvantages as well. One is that the initial independence of individual divisions would be lost with the new philosophy because it allowed the corporate to dictate terms to individual divisions although this was negotiated upon. This also disadvantaged the divisional managers in that their bonuses would not be automatic as they were before but they had to be worked for. Evaluation of the decision to use minimum performance standard (MPS) targets instead of stretch targets The decision to abandon the old method of stretch targets to the new method of Minimum performance standard was quite informed and appropriate for the company. Based on the fact that the company had not been doing quite well before, there was a need of changing their tactic so that they could improve their chances of competing favorably against other competitions in the market. Minimum performance standards would give the company a real chance of having a control over their performance across various departments .This was a positive move given the disparities that had been there in as far as performance of different divisions was concerned. I think this was in order for the purposes of having all departments work on the same footing. Its also important that any organization that aims at motivating its employees towards achievement of certain goals focuses on how realistic their achievement is. If they are realistic, the employees will be motivated to achieve them but if they are not, they will be demoralizing. The old philosophy can be said to have had negative impact on the performance of the organization, besides setting targets that were unrealistic, it was not motivating enough for the achievement of the same and encouraged employees not to exploit their full potential .However with the new system, it allowed performance based incentives .This was not only likely to encourage performance under different divisions .It was also capable of improving business prospects if it was handled appropriately. Should HCC managers have expected that the MPS target-setting philosophy would be equally effective in all four operating divisions? Based on this question, a no would have been most appropriate. Based on the performance history of the organization, there had existed disparities in as far as performance by different divisions .This meant that the individual strengths for each division was different. This being the case, it was not appropriate to imagine that just because the philosophy was considered appropriate it would bear the same results for was not a guarantee. Therefore the managers had no absolute reason of expecting that the philosophy would have been equally effective in all divisions. The performance of each division would depend on the ability of the manager to mobilize his staff towards achievement of set goals. It would also depend on the individual abilities of the staff members and their general commitment towards their assigned tasks and the achievement of organization goals. With this as the case therefore disparities would still be there in as far as the performance was concerned Also because this was a new philosophy that had not been tried before chances of it succeeding or failing were in equal measure so there would be no guarantee that it would be effective for all the departments in equal measure. What could have been done to Improve the Implementation Implementation of the new philosophy would have been improved by first trying it on one or two departments first before rolling it out to the whole organization, this could have given the corporate a rough picture of what to expect under the new philosophy .If there was a positive outcome they could then be able to implement it in other divisions. Sufficient consultation with the various stakeholders would also have improved implementation. There was a general feeling among the Division managers that the new philosophy was being forced on them. They even compared it to someone dictating to them when to brush their teeth. That could only mean one thing, that there were no sufficient consultations with them. Had there been a platform for this their fears and worries could have been addressed and they could be able to adopt and implement fully. The company should also have contracted experts to help in the transition because there was no previous experience in the organization on the new philosophy. Also, there were better ways to do this experiment where higher yields could have been produced. For example PCC could have been used. However, because of its toxic properties, its use is restricted.The purpose of this experiment was to determine which of the 3 compounds was formed from the starting material. The third compound was t he oxidation of both alcohols. This could not have been my product because of the results of my IR. I had a broad large absorption is the range of 3200 to 3500 wavenumbers. This indicates the presence of an alcohol. If my compound had been fully oxidized then there would be no such alcohol present. Also, because of my IR, I know that my compound was one of the other 2 compounds because of the strong sharp absorption at 1705 wavenumbers. This indicates the presence of a carbonyl. Also, my 2,4-DNP test was positive. Therefore I had to prove which of the two compounds my final product was. The first was the oxidation of the primary alcohol, forming an aldehyde and a secondary alcohol. This could not have been my product because the Tollens test. My test was negative indicating no such aldehyde. Also, the textbook states that aldehydes show 2 characteristic absorptions in the range of 2720-2820 wavenumbers. No such absorptions were present in my sample. Therefore my final product was th e oxidation of the secondary alcohol. I forgot to shake my sep funnel after my first addition of dichloromethane. I had to redo that step. Also, there is a very slight chance that a little bit of dichloromethane could have been left in my final product. When I was distilling, I thought I had boiled away everything in my flask. The dichloromethane distilled at 39.5 degrees. To avoid distilling to dryness, I removed the heat. However, there was still some product left. I just couldnt see it very easily. In order to achieve selectivity, sodium hypochlorite is used. It is reacted with acetic acid to form HOCl. Then HOCl is reacted in excess with the alcohol compound to push the reaction to the right in which OCl replaces the OH. Then water is added. It abstracts a hydrogen and the hydrogens electrons form a double bond to the oxygen. The chlorine is expelled while this double bond is formed. Temperature is also important in this reaction. The temperature must stay below 30 degrees Celsius to retain the selectivity. PCC and PDC can also be used to do the same procedure but are cancer suspect agents. Using bleach is much safer. Three tests are used to identify the product. I briefly discussed them earlier in my first paragraph.An IR is first used. This tells me what functional groups are present. The two regions that I am looking at are 3200-3500 and 1600-1800. This lets me know if I have an alcohol and a carbonyl. I had both of these in my final product. Two classification tests were used to find out if I had certain functional groups. 2,4-DNP is the first. It tells me that I have an aldehyde or a ketone. In this case a precipitate forms after the nucleophilic nitrogen on the 2,4-DNP replaces the oxygen on the carbonyl. This derivative is an orange precipitate and is easily recognized. I had a precipitate and theref ore I had either an aldehyde or a ketone. The last test is the Tollens test. The Tollens test is only a positive test for aldehydes. It forms silver when it further oxidizes the aldehyde. The silver forms a silver mirror on the bottom of the test tube. A positive test was easily recognized when I performed a test on benzaldehyde. My final product was definitely not positive for this test. By compiling the data from each of these tests, it is very easy to determine what functional group is selected over the other. Psycho Ryan McLeod Comp Lit 271 Psycho Response Section AD Being the props/set designer for the parlor scene in Psycho was a very intriguing task. Originally, boring old Hitchcock wanted to put some stuffed birds in the Norman's parlor, but lucky for me, and the film, he was sick that day. I liked the idea of Bates being a taxidermist in his spare time, but I wanted to elaborate on that idea a bit more. Instead of putting just birds in the parlor, I decided to put pictures of embalmed bodies on the wall, stuffed ape heads, along with some feministic interior decorations. The reason for the photos of embalmed bodies is to give not only Marion a creepy feeling of what Norman is all about, but also the audience. We learn later in the film that he has embalmed his mother in the house so I thought that some pictures of acts such as this would be appropriate, especially for foreshadowing. The stuffed ape heads is my favorite idea of mine over Hitchcock's dumb birds idea because an ape head looks very similar to a human head. Again, this would give the scene a very creepy feeling and offer to the audience that Norman Bates is not your average Joe. Anyone who would participate, or maybe practice stuffing heads of apes that look similar to a human head shows to the audience that they are unusual and seem to enjoy to preserve creatures, or mothers for that matter. Overall, to make the scene much more interesting, I decorated the room with flowered wall paper, baskets filled with potpourri, and other little ?womanish? things such as flowers and antique plates and spoons. Ultimately, Bates put these things in the parlor while he was in his mother's state of mind, but the important thing is, is that the audience does not know he has two personalities and therefore would wonder why this man has stuffed ape heads, pictures of embalmed dead bodies that are curiously surrounded with ?Old Woman?-type wallpaper and decorations. Hitchcock was on to something with the birds idea, but I feel that my additions to mise-en-scene revolving arou nd the parlor scene fit the image of Norman Bates more accurately and will ultimately make the film more interesting and the foreshadowing will be that much better to the audience. Animal Farm The novel Animal Farm by George Orwell is one of the most well recognized political satires of this time. Orwell has caused many elaborate interpretations to be written of his novel such as Language as Theme in Animal Farm, by Samir Elbarbary, is one of these interpretations. In Orwells? novel Animal Farm expresses the traits needed to maintain and secure a sense of power and control through the Pigs in the books? actions. The most significant of these traits are linguistic ability, the skill to manipulate ideas to the leaders? advantage and to posses the ability to confuse those less intelligent than them. These traits by themselves work alone and are flawlessly blended together to win the rest of the animals over. The Pigs? ability to overwhelm the animals with a vast vocabulary base and their talent of rhetoric allows them to keep a sense of power and control. This use of strong vocabulary controls the animals in such away they will listen to almost anything and believe it it?s the right course of action. For example, when Squealer exclaimed to his following crowd, Tactics, comrades, tactics!the animals were not certain what this meant? (Orwell 62) he used the word ?tactics? to take advantage of the other animals weak vocabulary and to strengthen his speech simultaneously. On top of this, the Pigs? speak in a complex way to embrace their power. One of the forms of complex speaking is stated by Samir Elbarbary where he says ?pitch raising used for additional reinforcement of persuasion?. (Elbarbary 3). Blending both strong vocabulary and complex speaking allows the Pigs to easily take advantage of their intelligence and use it to keep their position of power standing strong. The Pigs ways of m anipulating ideas to their advantage drastically strengthens there leader status. The pigs, such as Squealer who ?is the master manipulator of his approving listeners? (Elbarbary 3) obviously does a great job at this. He manipulates the animals to a great extent. This is shown when Squealer was ?sent to make the necessary explanations? to the animals. (Orwell 42) He addressed the animals in such a way where he said ?you do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike apples and milk, I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve out health.? By speaking in such a manipulative way he can break one of their base principles on the farm, which they created, to ?preserve their health?. As well as manipulative speaking the Pigs have ways of doing this sub consciously. In one case they use poetry and artwork to manipulate ideas. There was a piece of literature that was noticed and short ly after ?Napoleon approved the poem and caused it to be inscribed on the barn wall?surrounded by a portrait of Napoleon.? Not only does he use this to manipulate ideas, he uses it as propaganda for the Pigs. This is a manipulative act because Even though the poem isn?t directly about napoleon, he puts it next to a portrait of him to place that in the less intelligent animals? minds. The Pigs have the ability to confuse and take advantage of those less intelligent than them. In the paper Language as theme in Animal Farm Elbarbary stated that the Pigs ?take advantage of the Pigs linguistic vulnerability?. (Elbarbary 3). He derived this through the fact that when the animals use words that the other animals don?t comprehend they confuse them and make them more susceptible to the information they want to get across. They can do this even if the information isn?t true or even goes against the commandments that the farm is supposedly following. Not only do they just use that tactic, they will use ?language that becomes so opaque it parodies it commutative purpose?. This allows the pigs go so off topic to get the animals mind off something. Doing this enables the Pigs ?talk around things? and keep a firm position in power.
