Animal FArm Essays (797 words) - British Films, Cold War Films

Animal Farm The novel Animal Farm by George Orwell is one of the most well recognized political satires of this time. Orwell has caused many elaborate interpretations to be written of his novel such as Language as Theme in Animal Farm, by Samir Elbarbary, is one of these interpretations. In Orwells? novel Animal Farm expresses the traits needed to maintain and secure a sense of power and control through the Pigs in the books? actions. The most significant of these traits are linguistic ability, the skill to manipulate ideas to the leaders? advantage and to posses the ability to confuse those less intelligent than them. These traits by themselves work alone and are flawlessly blended together to win the rest of the animals over. The Pigs? ability to overwhelm the animals with a vast vocabulary base and their talent of rhetoric allows them to keep a sense of power and control. This use of strong vocabulary controls the animals in such away they will listen to almost anything and believe it it?s the right course of action. For example, when Squealer exclaimed to his following crowd, Tactics, comrades, tactics!the animals were not certain what this meant? (Orwell 62) he used the word ?tactics? to take advantage of the other animals weak vocabulary and to strengthen his speech simultaneously. On top of this, the Pigs? speak in a complex way to embrace their power. One of the forms of complex speaking is stated by Samir Elbarbary where he says ?pitch raising used for additional reinforcement of persuasion?. (Elbarbary 3). Blending both strong vocabulary and complex speaking allows the Pigs to easily take advantage of their intelligence and use it to keep their position of power standing strong. The Pigs ways of m anipulating ideas to their advantage drastically strengthens there leader status. The pigs, such as Squealer who ?is the master manipulator of his approving listeners? (Elbarbary 3) obviously does a great job at this. He manipulates the animals to a great extent. This is shown when Squealer was ?sent to make the necessary explanations? to the animals. (Orwell 42) He addressed the animals in such a way where he said ?you do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike apples and milk, I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve out health.? By speaking in such a manipulative way he can break one of their base principles on the farm, which they created, to ?preserve their health?. As well as manipulative speaking the Pigs have ways of doing this sub consciously. In one case they use poetry and artwork to manipulate ideas. There was a piece of literature that was noticed and short ly after ?Napoleon approved the poem and caused it to be inscribed on the barn wall?surrounded by a portrait of Napoleon.? Not only does he use this to manipulate ideas, he uses it as propaganda for the Pigs. This is a manipulative act because Even though the poem isn?t directly about napoleon, he puts it next to a portrait of him to place that in the less intelligent animals? minds. The Pigs have the ability to confuse and take advantage of those less intelligent than them. In the paper Language as theme in Animal Farm Elbarbary stated that the Pigs ?take advantage of the Pigs linguistic vulnerability?. (Elbarbary 3). He derived this through the fact that when the animals use words that the other animals don?t comprehend they confuse them and make them more susceptible to the information they want to get across. They can do this even if the information isn?t true or even goes against the commandments that the farm is supposedly following. Not only do they just use that tactic, they will use ?language that becomes so opaque it parodies it commutative purpose?. This allows the pigs go so off topic to get the animals mind off something. Doing this enables the Pigs ?talk around things? and keep a firm position in power. The Pigs ability to perform these things so smoothly without mistakes lets them keep a sense of power and control as leaders of Animal Farm. The Pigs

How to Talk About Failure in a Job Interview

How to Talk About Failure in a Job Interview When you’re putting together your resume and getting ready for an interview, you focus on making yourself look as perfect as possible. This is not a process where you want to let self-doubt and self-esteem issues creep in. Yet all that positive thinking and prep can be undone by one or two little questions in an interview. â€Å"Where could you use some improvement?† Or, â€Å"Can you tell me about a time when you failed.† After positioning yourself as kind of an uber-candidate, this can be a tricky navigation. You want to show an appropriate amount of honesty and humility, but who likes reliving past failures, let alone disclosing them to a potential employer? There are ways to do it that can help you get past these spots, without derailing your image as a confident, competent interviewee. Here are some things to consider when you talk about failure in a job interview.DO take it seriously.â€Å"I’m addicted to Mountain Dew† is not the way to go her e. The interviewer is trying to get a sense of your level of self-awareness, and whether or not there are any red flags or major gaps.DON’T use a clichà ©d comeback.â€Å"I care too much.† â€Å"I work too hard.† â€Å"I am too dedicated to my job.† The interviewer isn’t looking for a beauty pageant answer†¦he or she is looking for someone who can be frank about shortcomings, and self-aware enough to try to overcome them. Backdoor bragging that tries to show that you’re just too well-liked or too diligent at work will most likely earn you an eye roll.DO be honest†¦It’s okay to admit you’re not perfect. This is one question in an interview that is 99% about your accomplishments and qualifications, so approach it honestly and candidly. The interviewer will appreciate your candidness.†¦But DON’T treat it like a confession. This is not the time to list all of your drawbacks. (Unless you’re applying for the CIA, in which case you might as well be honest, because they will find out.) Ahead of time, think about one or two areas where you know you need improvement, and make sure they’re not red flag-worthy. For example, if you’re not great with numbers, don’t answer the question with, â€Å"I suck at math.† Basically, anything that makes you seem â€Å"bad† at something is not the right choice here.DO perform the spin-pivot move.Whatever you do go with, make sure you use it to emphasize strengths you do have. With the bad-at-math example, you can emphasize that you prefer creative problem solving to hard-and-fast numbers. Frame it as a choice between A (weakness) and B (strength), and talk about how you’d choose B.DON’T use anything in the basic job description as your weakness. If you despise being around kids, and are applying for an elementary school position, well- what are you doing there? But more importantly, if you’re aske d about an area where you could improve, mention that you’re always looking to improve your ability to relate to students.DO emphasize that you’re a work in progress.Part of what an interviewer is trying to assess is your growth potential. When you talk about any challenges or areas of improvement you have, be sure to say that you’re aware of your limitations in X area, and that you’re constantly seeking to be better/more efficient/stronger.DO avoid using words like â€Å"weakness,† even if the interviewer uses it first.Instead, frame it as a challenge, or avoid using negative nouns altogether.Getting past this moment in an interview can be awkward, but if you do some thinking ahead of time about your challenges and how you plan to turn those into strengths, you should be back in safe, â€Å"I’m awesome† territory in no time.

Willy Russell's Educating Rita Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Willy Russell's Educating Rita - Essay Example It traces the development of a young working class hairdresser who attends English literature tutorials with an older academic called Frank. While the story of Rita is both amusing and poignant, it is in fact the transformation of Frank that provides the richest message of the play. At the beginning of the play there is a deliberate contrast between Rita’s fresh approach to literature, and Frank’s obvious boredom with his job. This can be seen in the way that Rita surprises Frank in her answers to his assignment questions, for example when he asks her a question about how to stage the play Peer Gynt, Rita answers â€Å"Do it on the radio† (Act I, Scene 4). The audience knows that part of the reason for this short answer is that she had to struggle against the combined opposition of her partner and her father to complete this assingmnent. Frank, however, interprets this the answer of a genius, showing Rita is an original spirit, able to think around the question a nd reframe it in an intelligent and quite radical way. It is not the kind of answer that Frank would expect from his usual students.

The government supporters who have voiced their mild allegations of the ruling class have also found their way into kangaroo courts or subjected to imprisonment without trial.3 The political prison is full beyond capacity since its projected to hold about 10, 000 prisoners yet it now has over three times this number. This number of political prisoners is extremely high considering it is a country of about 27 million people most of which are young adults. The crisis of imprisonment keeps on getting worse at the dawn of each day since more and more people are arrested and imprisoned on unclear grounds. The family members of the prisoners are rarely awarded an opportunity to visit their imprisoned relatives in those dilapidated conditions and thus are less aware of the jubilations faced by their people.5 The government of Saudi Arabia has shown little interest in helping the prisoners, most of which who are because of a political challenge against their dynasties. The government feels that this is the best means of treating the prisoners to remove any kind of political uprising, which may challenge their authority and leadership. The government conditions are so severe that even the released prisoners are still pressured with travel bans and other forms of threats to avoid. Those who fight for human rights are also subjected to employment bans, teaching bans, and imprisonment of other family members and close relatives so that they stop their calls for change in the autocratic leadership witnessed in Saudi Arabia. 6 Women Rights This is the country where women lead stranger life than any other part of the word.
